Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 06: The week-long programme to observe the World Organ Donation Day,  got underway today at KIMSHEALTH with  honouring of the families and relatives of deceased organ donors. Minister for Local Self Governments and Excise Shri M V Govindan inaugurated the programme, titled “Randamoozham.” KIMSHEALTH will also conduct various awareness programmes as part of the World Organ Donation Day.

Noting that the state government is looking seriously into organ donation awareness campaigns, Shri Govindan said a right focus is needed in creating awareness about it among the public with the help of youth and voluntary organizations.   “There are efforts to trigger malicious campaigns against organ donation. But we must convince the people that organ donation is a humanitarian message that elevates their social life,” the minister added.

Dr M I Sahadulla, Chairman and Managing Director, KIMSHEALTH, in his presidential address, said, “There are certain bottlenecks in organ donation process that normally delays the precious time of saving the life of a patient. To avoid this, the government and private sectors must act together to make hassle-free procedures.” He said globally organs are donated mostly after the death of a patient, while in India especially Kerala, living people are also donating organs.

Actress Priyanka Nair, who was special guest, said aside from spreading the message of organ donation, the government should create a mechanism for time-bound evaluation of the outcome of the awareness programmes.

Dr G Vijayaraghavan, Vice-Chairman, KIMSHEALTH, said organ donation plays a vital role in modern medicine.

Dr Praveen Muralidharan, Medical Superintendent and Senior Consultant, Department of Nephrology, KIMSHEALTH welcomed the gathering and Dr R Muralidharan, Consultant-Critical Care, proposed a vote of thanks.
