Global oncology conclave to commence on Aug. 13 at Kovalam

• Well-known experts to converge at two-day “Dr M Krishnan Nair Memorial International Clinical Oncology” meet • To be held at Kovalam under the aegis of AROI

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 11: Renowned oncologists and specialists in related disciplines from across the world will make presentations on the latest developments in cancer care and research at the two-day “Dr M Krishnan Nair Memorial International Clinical Oncology Conference” that begins on August 13.

The conference is jointly organised by the Department of Radiation Oncology of the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Thiruvananthapuram, and the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology of Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, on behalf of the Kerala State Chapter of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROI).

Smt Tinku Biswal IAS, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Government of Kerala, will inaugurate the conference, to be conducted in hybrid mode, at Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel, Kovalam, on August 13 at 6 pm. 

A memoir authored by medical and non-medical people, who had shared an intense bond with the world’s renowned oncologist, Dr M Krishnan Nair, will be released at the function.

A pioneer and visionary, Dr Nair had envisaged many of the cancer control activities in India. He is the founding Director of RCC in the state capital, where he had served with dedication for over two decades. 

 

Dr Nair received several honours, including the Bhishmacharya Award for outstanding contribution in the field of Medicine, and the Roll of Honour (1996) by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), Geneva. He was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2001 for his contributions to the field of cancer care.

 

Dr Sharmila Mary Joseph, IAS, Principal Secretary, Local Self Government, and Dr Kala Kesavan, Principal, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, will deliver felicitations at the inaugural function.

 

According to Dr Francis V James, Secretary, AROI, it’s the first time such a conference of this grand scale is being conducted in Kerala, on an important topic.

He said the conclave will be beneficial for academicians, researchers and students to know about the modern trends in cancer care by listening to globally renowned expert.

The conclave will have virtual speakers including Dr John A Kalapurakal, US, to speak on “Proton Beam Therapy for Pediatric Malignancies”; Dr Kurian Joseph, Canada, on “ChemoRT for Anal Carcinoma in the Era of IMRT;” Dr GK Rath, India, on “Cancer Control Programmes in India”; Dr Ajay Sandhu, US, on “SBRT for Lung Cancer”; and Dr R Sankaranarayanan, India, on “Cancer Screening”.

 

Besides, Dr Rojymon Jacob, US, will deliver lecture on “Newer Strategies for Organ Preservation in Rectal Cancer,” and Dr Najeeb Mohideen, US, on “SBRT for Oligometastatic Disease” at the venue.

 

The other speakers at the conference are Dr Yarnold, UK (“Radiology of Ultra Hypofractionation”); Dr Rema Jyothirmayi, UK (“Maintenance Therapy Options Following First-line Chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer”); Dr Chandan Guha, US (Combining Novel Agents with Radiotherapy”); Dr TV Ajithkumar, UK (“The Art of Oncology Clinical Decision Making”); and Dr Ramachandran V, UK (“Recent Advances in Prostate Cancer”) among others.

 

In a panel discussion on “Breast Cancer” on the inaugural day, Dr Ajayakumar T, Dr Asha Arjunan, Dr Paul Augustine, Dr Anitha Mathews, and Dr Venugopal M will be the panellists.  Dr Naveenkumar P will be the moderator.

 

Dr Cessal KT will moderate a panel discussion on “Head and Neck Cancers”, which will have Dr K Ramadas, Dr Sureshkumar K, Dr Anoop R, Dr Shaji Thomas, Dr Anila KR and Dr Priya A as panellists. 

 

On the concluding day, a panel discussion on “Cancers of the Uterus” will be held with Dr Dinesh M, Dr Aswinkumar, Dr Rema P, Dr Preethi TR and Dr Jubiee Raj as panellists and Dr John Joseph as moderator.
