Global medical experts to share thoughts at Platinum Jubilee of Tvm Medical College

• CM to open three-day International Medical Convention on Aug. 26

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 12: Globally renowned experts in various domains of medical science will share their insights into the current trends and challenges in health sector, especially on the colossal impact of viruses, at the three-day international Medical Convention starting here on August 26 to mark the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Trivandrum Medical College (TMC).

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the conclave at the Diamond Jubilee Alumni Auditorium, Trivandrum Medical College, at 5 pm on August 26, co-patron of the platinum jubilee organizing committee Kadakampally Surendran MLA told a press conference here today.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Veena George will preside over the inaugural function and Minister for General Education and Labour V Sivankutty will be the keynote speaker.

The event is organized jointly by TMC Alumni Association, Kerala University of Health Sciences; State Medical Education Department, Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram; Government Nursing College, Thiruvananthapuram; SCTIMST; IMA Thiruvananthapuram; and Students Union, TMC.

In various sessions and seminars in three days, an impressive line-up of speakers including Prof Roberto Gallo, renowned pioneer of virology, will speak on the health challenges ahead, followed by interactions. 

The Government attached top priority to the development of TMC as the premier healthcare and medical education institution of the state, Surendran said.

The Government’s aim is to develop TMC as an institution on the model of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS). Massive development project costing Rs 717 crore is the platinum jubilee gift from the Government to TMC. The first phase of works has already been completed. The second and third phases will be completed in three to four years. Out of the sanctioned amount, Rs 300 crore is earmarked for purchasing the most advanced medical equipment for the medical college, Surendran said.

Dr C John Panicker, organizing chairman of the Platinum Jubilee Convention, said it is significant that the new era of modern medicine in Kerala was ushered in by the founding of TMC seven decades back.

TMC Principal Dr KalaKesavan P, Media Committee Chairman Dr Sulfi N, Trivandrum Dental College Principal Dr Harsha Kumar and Prof Raja Mohan of Kerala University of Health Sciences were also present at the press meet.

The medical convention will have a series of commemoration orations in memory of some very renowned alumni of the institution who expired in the past few years. These doyens had played a seminal role in building the renowned Kerala model of healthcare.

Prof Gallo, Baltimore, USA; Prof Anders Vahine, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm; Dr Gagandeep Kang, CMC Vellore; Dr Hari Parameswaran, USA; and Dr Sabarinath Radhakrishnan, USA will make presentations at a seminar on the second day of the conclave which is themed on “Virology and Immunology”.

Eminent virologist Dr T Jacob John, CMC Vellore and Dr C S Johny, USA, both alumni of TMC, will be among the speakers.

Dr C S Pitchumoni from the USA will deliver the Platinum Jubilee oration, while Dr Mathew Thomas, Former HOD, Medicine, TMC, will deliver the Prof Joy Philip commemoration speech.

The other speakers on the second day include Dr. PP Joseph oration by Dr K Rajasekharan Nair, former HOD, Neurology, TMC; Dr Najeeb Osman, USA; Dr Nisha Nigil, Canada; Dr Vinod Menon, UK; Dr Nigil Haroon, Canada; and Dr Fathahudeen, HOD, Pulmonary Medicine, TMC.

On the concluding day, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan and Adv Antony Raju, Minister for Transport will be the Chief Guests at the session titled “Widening the Horizon”. Justice Indu Malhotra, former judge of the Supreme Court, and Dr Shashi Tharoor MP will be the key-note speakers. The session will be chaired by Kadakampally Surendran MLA.

In another session, Dr George Varghese, Senior ENT Consultant, will deliver the Prof Rajamma Rajan memorial address.

Dr Thomas Mathew, Former HOD, Nephrology, Kozhikode, will give the Prof Roy Chally oration. Prof M Krishnan Nair memorial oration will be delivered by Dr Cheriyan Varghese, WHO.

Dr K Ramakrishna Nair, Former HOD, Plastic Surgery, TMC, will speak about “Modern Trends in Burns Management” in his speech on Prof P A Thomas.

A panel discussion on “Chronic Liver Diseases” has been scheduled in the afternoon session on the third day with Dr Narendranathan M, Former HOD, Medical Gastro, TMC; and Dr Ramesh Rajan, HOD, Surgical Gastro, TMC, as moderators.

The panelists include Dr C S Pitchumoni, USA; Dr Paul Gibbs, UK; Dr Subhash Gupta, MAX Hospital, New Delhi; Dr S Sudhindran, AIMS, Kochi; Dr Shabeerali TU, KIMSHEALTH; and Dr D Krishnadas, HOD-MGE, TMC. 

Various programmes will be organized as part of the Platinum Jubilee till November this year.

A medical aid project called “Thalirukkal” for children coming for treatment of chronic diseases at CDC, RCC, TMC, SCTIMST and SAT hospitals will be launched on the occasion. Under the programme, children requiring continued treatment would be provided medical advice and financial assistance.

The Knowledge Centre set up at the TMC library, funded by TMC alumnus and famous USA-based Cardiologist Dr Raveendranathan, will also be inaugurated on the occasion.
