Step up efforts to address language disorders among kids: Experts

• Three-day ‘ICCAP 2022’ concludes at NISH

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 17: The three-day International Conference on Communication Disorders and Audiological Practices (ICCAP 2022) concluded at the National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) here on Saturday with experts emphasizing the need to adopt evidence-based practices in addressing the language disorders among children.

Participating in various sessions on the final day, they said exploring various available options is extremely importance in addressing the issue to bring about a meaningful difference in the lives of hearing-impaired children.

     Speaking on “Beyond Language Learning”, Ms Chitra Thadathil, Founder and Director, Dimensions Centre for Child Development, Bengaluru, highlighted the need of understanding each child's sensory requirements for better prognosis. 

Introducing the new trends in the field, Ms Chitra, emphasized the importance of evidence-based practices in child language disorders.

Ms Carla Sumesh, Teaching Programme Coordinator, Al Noor Rehabilitation and welfare Association, Dubai, said a coherent management system is needed to address communication disorders.

Dr Carol Westby, CCC Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), Bilingual Multicultural Services, New Mexico, said increased screen time among young children and its impact has been a concern. Dr Westby urged for an awareness campaign on the short and long-term impacts of screen time and guidelines for choosing appropriate content, context and factors related to the child.

Around 300 delegates attended the hybrid conference and engaged in interactive discussions.  

The conclave is jointly organized by the Department of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (ASLP) and the Department of Neuro Developmental Sciences (NDS) at NISH.

The sessions at the meet focused on evidence-based studies, practices, novel issues and breakthroughs in the domain that concern people having communication disorders across the world.
