Karnataka stopped milk supply due to shortfall in procurement: TRCMPU
Trivandrum / October 21, 2022

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 21: The Trivandrum Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union (TRCMPU) Administrative Committee Convener Shri N Bhasurangan today refuted the reports that Karnataka has suspended supply of milk to the Milma’s  Regional Union to meet the excess demand due to delay in clearing the arrears.

In a statement here, Shri Bhasurangan said Karnataka has stopped supplying milk to the Regional Union as that state is facing a shortfall in internal procurement. The suggestion that the neighbouring state had suspended the supply as the Regional Union has run into arrears of payment is unfounded, he said.

Trivandrum Regional Union owes only Rs 14.06 crore to Karnataka Milk Marketing Federation and that is due to not getting the invoices promptly. This amount will be paid as soon as the invoices are made available.

The excess demand for milk was met by milk sourced from Karnataka by the Trivandrum and Ernakulam Regional Unions of Milma. Such purchases are done by the Kerala State Co-operative Milk Federation (KCMMF) to meet the shortfall in internal demand felt by the Regional Unions. In such purchases payments are made in advance to the maximum possible level.

KCMMF has also purchased milk from Maharashtra to meet the domestic demand whenever that exceeded internal procurement.

The Trivandrum region is facing no crisis whatsoever in meeting the entire demand of milk. The impression being created to the contrary is unfounded and politically motivated, Shri Bhasurangan said.

Also, some persons who joined private dairy enterprises after retirement from higher positions in Milma are part of this baseless propaganda, he said.

The support extended to the dairy sector by the state government is exemplary and no one would be allowed to weaken the co-operative sector, Shri Bhasurangan said.

TRCMPU the other day announced a special incentive of Rs 5 per litre of milk collected from dairy farmers above the daily average quantum procured from them by the milk co-operative societies in the region from October 21. This is in addition to the special incentive of Rs 4 being given by the Government. These measures are taken to increase internal procurement. After the present Administrative Committee took over the sales had gone up to 6 lakh litres per day by stepping up marketing campaigns, Shri Bhasurangan added.
