‘Internet of Cattle Innovation Challenge’ for IoT startups unveiled

• KSUM launches first-of-its-kind initiative at state’s maiden IoT summit

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 28: In a first-of-its-kind initiative that seeks to promote smart dairy farming and livestock management, Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) today launched aninnovation challenge for startups to come up with a set of cost-effective Internet of Things (IoT) devices that could monitor the vital parameters of cows including their health and early detection of diseases.   

Titled Internet of Cattle (IoC) Innovation Challenge, announced at the first IoT summit held by KSUM, the initiative also seeks from startups an animal identification system similar to Aadhaar ID that will enable to identify cattle, provide alerts on their health and genetic mapping including pedigree and possible milk yield.

In his inaugural address to the summit, Sr. Vice President & State Head, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., Shri K.C Narendran, said with the launch of 5G services in the country, the gap between global innovation and India innovation has been bridged, throwing up immense opportunities of global standards for startups by exploring IoT.

Shri Narendran said whatever we innovate here is quickly moved to rest of the world now.

India already has a large addressable market for 5G. With Jio rolling out 5G services in whole taluks across India by the end of 2023, it’s going to be like India on top, he said.

Shri Narendran added that in Kerala, around 70 percent of people are using smartphones and 5G will be rolled out by his company in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode and Malappuram by February next year.

KSUM CEO Shri Anoop Ambika, in his welcome address, said the IoC innovation challenge is a unique concept and KSUM is proud to introduce such an initiative for the benefit of the animal husbandry sector.

He noted that IoT, which has immense possibilities, can potentially change the way things are operated now.  “The information overload has created a lot of aspirational needs for the youth and they are out there to explore the world. But we want them to bring back the experience and knowledge for the betterment of the country,” the CEO said. 

“The state is seriously analysing youths, who aspire to go abroad with the advent of Internet. We want startups to create an ecosystem that makes people aspire to comeback and settle down in the country,” Shri Ambika suggested. 

Shri Anoop urged youngsters to come up with exciting ideas, consolidate them after listening to experts and make use of the system available with the government in the form of infrastructure, grants and funds.  

According to him, sensitisation in terms of what is possible will be the output of the IoT summit.

Senior Director, C-DAC, Ms Rajasree S was also present on the occasion.

Shri M Sivasankar, Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry, and Sports and Youth Welfare; Shri Snehil Singh, Deputy IT Secretary, Department of Electronics and IT, Government of Kerala; Shri Santhosh Kurup, CEO, ICT Academy; Dr Santhosh Babu, MD, KSITIL; Smt Rajlakshmi Borthakur, Founder & CEO, TerraBlue XT; Shri Vinay Solanki, AVP & Business Head, Napino Digital Solutions; Shri Shiju Sasi, Executive Director, India & VP, Engineering at WiSilica; Shri Pranay Verma, Chief Researcher, Hitachi India; Dr Berin Pathrose, Director of Planning, Kerala Agricultural University; and Shri Vinod J Nair, Delivery Head-IoT & DE, TCS, et.al attended various panel sessions of the one-day event.

At the summit, KSUM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kerala Medical Technology Consortium (KMTC) to promote innovations and entrepreneurship in the medical technology,medical devices and allied areas. Shri Anoop and Special Officer of KMTC Shri Padmakumar. C exchanged the MoU.

Around 15 selected startups showcased their innovative products at the IoT Startup Expo held on the sidelines of the summit. 

An Investor Café, connecting investors to startup founders, Technology Master Class on “Connected Platforms in Mobility” by Shri Anumod Sukumaran, Expert-Solution Architecture IoT at Bosch Global; sessions onsoftware technologies, IP Clinic based on intellectual property rights; and Mentor Clinic for startups were also held.

Leading industry experts, investors, and officials of government departments focusing on IoT sector attended the summit, which aims at bringing startups relating to all domains of technology on the IoT platform including smart cities, agritech, meditech, health and automobile.

KSUM is the nodal agency of the Kerala Government for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state.
