Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 03: Stressing the importance of strictly adhering to honesty and integrity while working in government service, former DGP Shri A Hemachandran today said it is important to keep in mind always that corruption is something that impedes the national security, besides directly affecting the country’s development.

“Any activity that weakens the system is anti-national and it is important to realise that the work of each one of us is crucial,” Shri Hemachandran said while delivering a lecture at Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) here in connection with Vigilance Awareness Week on Thursday.

Speaking on the theme “Corruption Free India for a Developed Nation,” he said people quite often take corruption casually and it is the environment and vulnerability of individuals contribute to practices like kickbacks. He reminded that by leading a life of integrity one is helping one’s own life.

Inculcating proper procedures and transparent system are vital in governmental systems, he said.

“There are coercive and collusive corruptions, which are ubiquitous. It’s the responsibility of the public servant to adhere to the rules and regulations. Public money has to be spent in a manner like a prudent and sensible man spends his own money,” Shri Hemachandran said.

Noting that the theme of this year’s Vigilance Awareness Week is significant, Shri Hemachandran said RGCB can play a key role in anti-corruption activities. He urged the researchers to create an environment where they can develop their capabilities and contribute to their organisation with their potential.

“The true spirit is born when we contribute our true potential to nation-building”, he added.
